Deep Sahara Odyssey: a camel crossing of the erg

Seven days with a camel caravan: walking at dawn and dusk, resting at midday and sleeping in the open.

← All posts

This is travel at the speed of a camel, about 4 km an hour. The camels carry your luggage while you walk (or ride, whenever you like) through dunes, dry lakebeds and stony plains that no road reaches.

Days follow the heat: you walk in the cool morning, rest in the shade of a tent at midday and walk again until evening. Nights are spent under the stars or in a simple camp, with the caravan around you.

Highlights

  • A full crossing with camels carrying the luggage
  • Sleeping in the open under the stars
  • Wells and nomad tracks off the road
  • Local guides and cameleers

The route

  1. Day 1

By 4×4 from Foum Zguid to the edge of Lake Iriki, where the caravan is waiting. First walk and first camp.

  2. Days 2–6

Five days of walking and riding through the erg: about five hours a day, split between morning and late afternoon.

  3. Day 7

A last sunrise on the dunes, then 4×4 back to Foum Zguid.

Good to know

  • Best from October to March; we do not recommend it in the hot months.
  • You should be comfortable walking 4 to 5 hours a day. Bring a small daypack; the rest travels by camel.
